December Top of the Month Club 2017

One of my tricks during this dark time of year is to get up early to watch the first rays of the sun as they angle into the house. I sit at an eastern window to catch the warm light, tilting myself like a human solar panel in order to gather enough sunlight to fill my day-battery. It works perfectly - as long as we have a bright sunrise!

A few weeks ago, we experienced a long string of sunless grey days. My battery started to run low so I bought a bouquet of pink tulips for the kitchen table to add some sunshine. It was a pleasure to walk into the kitchen and see them gleaming there: tulips are above all, color, light and hope! What I didn’t anticipate was the surprise gift at the end of the day: the rays from the sunset came in from the west, striking the kitchen table and lighting the tulips, while everything outside the sun’s direct path sank into the darkness. Welcome to Tulips in the Dark, our December TOMC!

Our wool this month is Superfine Merino. At 19 microns, this wool is incredibly soft. It loves to be spun fine with lots of twist but it also loves to coil and beehive! If you haven’t spun merino before, you are in for a treat!

Our wool/silk blend this month is Polwarth/Silk 85/15. Polwarth is such a favorite: it spins into a yarn with spectacular body, and the gleaming Tussah silk adds eye-catching gloss.

Our companion tonal is Violet Night.

Wishing you much color, light and hope and Happy Spinning to you!

Warm regards,
Mary Ann and Stephen

Situated on a hill overlooking the Haw River, Three Waters Farm looks out over a mixed terrain of fields, woods, and water in the piedmont of North Carolina. We moved here in 1989 with the intent to raise our family on a working homestead. Initially we produced a mix of organic vegetables, cut flowers, goat cheese, and baked goods at the Carrboro Farmers' Market.
Since 1997, we have focused on making products from our sheep's wool and our goat's milk. We produce a variety of hand-painted yarns, and spinning fibers, and from our goat's milk, we make Goat's Milk True-soap, using our own special recipe.
